Por primera vez en la historia un terremoto ha sido registrado en Marte por el sismómetro francés SEIS, según informa el Centro Nacional de Estudios Espaciales de Francia (CNES, por sus siglas en francés).
Este sismómetro fue instalado en el suelo del planeta rojo por el vehículo InSight de la NASA.
Se informa que el temblor, detectado en el día 128 de la misión, el pasado 6 de abril, parece provenir del interior de Marte. La causa de este evento sísmico aún se desconoce.
Ese tipo de temblores nunca se habían captado desde la Tierra. Sin embargo, debido a que la superficie de Marte está prácticamente muerta, los sensores altamente sensibles del sismómetro lograron detectar este débil ruido, explican los científicos.
Asimismo, ha sido publicado un audio de este temblor.
Fueron registradas también otras tres señales, las cuales también podrían ser de origen sísmico. Estas señales fueron mucho más débiles y solo fueron detectadas por los sensores ultrasensibles de SEIS, llamados ‘VBB’.
La sonda InSight, que se encuentra en el planeta rojo desde el pasado 26 de noviembre, tiene como objetivo el estudio de la actividad sismológica de Marte.
