«Es claramente algo a tener en cuenta y a lo que hay que hacer frente, pero ya me he topado con obstáculos en el pasado», asevera el músico en un comunicado colgado en Facebook, en el que subraya que el tratamiento que ha planificado junto a sus médicos parece tener unas opciones de éxito del 90 por ciento.
Mustaine (La Mesa, 1961), de 57 años, asegura a continuación que Megadeth volverá a estar en la carretera «tan pronto como sea posible» y que, mientras se prolongue su curación, el grupo trabajará en el estudio en la continuación de su último disco, «Dystopia» (2016).
El músico californiano, que en los inicios de su carrera formó parte de Metallica antes de ser expulsado por la alta ingesta de alcohol y drogas, formó Megadeth en 1983, en parte por el despecho, y llegó a convertirla en una de las formaciones emblemáticas del llamado «trash metal».
De hecho, se estima que el grupo ha vendido más de 38 millones de discos en todo el mundo. Además, ha recibido doce nominaciones a los premios Grammy, una de las cuales materializó en 2017 al serle concedido el galardón a la mejor actuación de «metal» por la canción «Dystopia».
La del cáncer de garganta no es la primera anomalía que obliga a Mustaine a alejarse un tiempo de la música, ya que en 2003 tuvo que recuperarse de una herida en el brazo que amenazó su continuidad en la música, experiencia que, según él, lo acercó a Dios.
Poco después tuvo que enfrentarse a la demanda de un exmiembro de Megadeth, el famoso bajista David Ellefson, por lo que este consideraba un reparto injusto de ingresos, aunque esta denuncia no prosperó en los juzgados.
