El módulo espacial israelí Bereshit, que pretendía aterrizar hoy en la luna, no consiguió llegar finalmente con éxito al satélite, tras semanas de ruta por el espacio para cumplir con su misión.
El proceso de aterrizaje quedó abortado a las 22:25 hora local (15:25 hora boliviana), cuando estaba previsto que la aeronave llegara a la superficie lunar, según se retransmitió en directo a través de un canal de Youtube habilitado por los promotores del proyecto, la entidad privada SpaceIl y el grupo estatal Industria Aeroespacial de Israel (IAI).
Tras comenzar su maniobra final de aterrizaje a las 22:10 hora local, la aeronave no tripulada, de 585 kilos de peso y 1,5 metros, que costó alrededor de 100 millones de dólares, inició un proceso calificado por los ingenieros de la IAI como «un camino de no retorno», pero perdió su motor principal, se encaminó hacia un descenso incontrolado y no consiguió aterrizar.
Los ingenieros de la IAI, que controlaban y contemplaban el proceso de aterrizaje desde su base en Yehud (centro de Israel), comunicaron que la operación había fracasado ante un público expectante.
«Si no lo consigues, lo pruebas otra vez», declaró el primer ministro israelí, Benjamín Netanyahu, que se encontraba en la base aeroespacial, donde consoló a los ingenieros, que alegaron, con sentimientos encontrados de decepción y satisfacción, que pese a fracasar en el último momento, era un logro que la aeronave hubiera llegado a estar tan cerca de la Luna.
El módulo lunar no tripulado fue puesta en órbita el pasado 22 de febrero, en la primera misión israelí que se llevaba a cabo y se trataba del primer viaje espacial de la historia sufragado enteramente por donaciones privadas y dedicado a fines educativos.
En caso de haber tocado la superficie del satélite, Israel se hubiera convertido en el cuarto país de la historia en conseguir este hito.
